Magnesium

Magnesium is a very important and vital mineral. It is required as a co-factor for more than 500 different processes in the body. Studies have shown that a magnesium deficiency is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies today and can lead to a variety of health problems.

Magnesium through Diet and Supplementation

The recommended amount of 300 to 400 mg magnesium is not sufficient in most cases, as the magnesium requirement increases accordingly under increased stress, excessive physical activity or after surgery. Certain medications or toxins can also lead to a depletion of magnesium.

Magnesium is found in plant-based foods such as pumpkin seeds, almonds, bananas and sesame seeds. But dark chocolate also contains some magnesium. It should be taken in both, through the diet and through a correctly adapted supplement. Magnesium can be effectively supplied in the form of infusions, as a dietary supplement or transdermally as magnesium oil. The indication, choice of remedy and dosage should be in the hands of a competent doctor.

Magnesium deficiency is diagnosed by means of a blood test, which can be carried out on serum or whole blood. Whole blood analysis, in contrast to serum analysis, examines the entire blood, including the components bound in the red blood cells. Due to the considerably lower mineral content in serum compared to blood cells, whole blood analysis should always be preferred for precise identification of a magnesium deficiency.
