Stromal Vascular Fraction (SVF)
The stromal vascular fraction (SVF) is derived from adipose tissue and is rich in regenerative cells, particularly mesenchymal stem cells, as well as endothelial cells and immune cells. Interestingly, adipose tissue is the body’s richest source of stem cells. In recent years, SVF therapy has gained increasing importance due to its potential for treating cartilage damage and osteoarthritis.
SVF Therapy Procedure
First, adipose tissue is extracted from the patient, usually from the abdominal area, through gentle liposuction under local anesthesia. The harvested fat is then mechanically processed to separate the SVF from other cell types. The obtained cell fraction, particularly the contained stem cells, is immediately injected into the affected joint region, such as the Hoffa’s fat pad in the knee, where the stem cells can then develop their regenerative effect.
Effects of SVF Therapy on Cartilage Damage and Osteoarthritis
SVF consists of a concentration of stem cells and growth factors with unique anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties. The stem cells, introduced into the affected region through targeted injection, stimulate the release of anti-inflammatory factors that slow the progression of inflammation in osteoarthritis and reduce pain. Simultaneously, the stem cells can differentiate into cartilage cells and contribute to the regeneration of damaged cartilage tissue by dividing in the area of cartilage damage and closing resulting gaps. This can restore smooth joint function naturally without metal implants.
Research Status on SVF Therapy
As this form of therapy is relatively new, research and studies, particularly regarding long-term outcomes, are still limited. However, the results on the effectiveness of SVF therapy for cartilage damage and osteoarthritis are very promising. Initial clinical studies and observations show that SVF injection can lead to pain reduction and improved joint function. A 2021 study shows improvement in over 70% of patients. Joint arthroscopy before and after SVF treatment of the knee sometimes showed complete coverage of existing cartilage damage.
